What’s in the news?
🌷Full bloom Lotus in a muddy pond
Mainstream companies have been jolted by the sudden popularity and acceptance of online-first brands. In a bid to enjoy a piece of the D2C pie, traditional players have started acquiring stakes in these brands e.g. Colgate Palmolive in Bombay Shaving Company, Emami in The Man Company, Parle Products in health food company ASAP Bars, Unilever Ventures in personal care brands Phy & Plum, and Marico in Just Herbs and Beardo.
Next to the list is beauty-care brand Lotus Herbals which has acquired a 25% stake in online skincare brand Conscious Chemist, following its last year’s investments in Ayurvedic beauty brand SoulTree and dermaceutical company Fix Derma India.
🏆 RAW’s Marvellous success
RAW Pressery has collaborated with 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' to roll out limited edition bottles to celebrate the success of the movie in India. Such collaborations typically lead to new customer acquisition and brand building. This is the second collaboration of RAW with Marvel franchise,
Brand synergies are a cool way to curate an immersive experience for the customers and D2C brands have been giving this a fair try: boAt X Marvel, Yellow Chimes X Harry Potter, Kuber X Disney, Bewakoof X DC etc.
🧵Blouse on Cloud
After food, your clothes are being prepared on Cloud too. Inspired by Bombay Shirt Company, Cloudtailor has set up an app-based tailoring solution for women. Its offerings include free designer assistance, VR visualization of dresses and doorstep deliveries. Cloudtailor recently raised USD 1 mn as it brings convenience and efficiency to the ladies' customized-offline-tailoring model.
💎Sleek Jewels on fleek
Today’s fashion apparel trends go hand-in-hand with accessories required to achieve the OOTD! Consumers are looking for daily wear that is light-weighted yet fashionable jewellery. Acing consumer love in this segment is Silver jewellery startup GIVA, offering a range of designs with embellishments of coloured stones.
GIVA has cracked the right mix of product, price and consumer, leading to raising USD 10 mn recently. Its competitors include Melorra, Pipa.Bella, Voylla, JewelMaze, (and others that we covered in our newsletter).

Trend of the week: Eyewear Industry 👓
Traditional eyewear players had formed an "eyewear mafia" that kept prices high and competition low. Lenskart, the OG eyewear startup shook this mafia with its fashion-centric eyewear at an affordable price - leveraging online operations, vertical integration and digital innovations. While the unorganised offline channel takes up the majority stake, new eyewear brands are now gaining prominence following the footsteps of Lenskart to become a part of the fashion eyewear industry, which is expected to reach USD 13.6 bn by 2024:
